Next Stop for the Mobile Voting Precinct: Austin, TX

August 20th, 2010

As we close out day four of our Mobile Voting Precinct Southeastern tour, we are happy to report back that our day in the Big Easy has been quite productive. We wish we could report that our night ended quietly last night after we arrived in New Orleans, but that is another comical situation that cannot be overlooked; more of that to come. Despite the inferno heat and a thirty minute long torrential downpour this afternoon, we had many visitors at our MVP demonstration, which was accompanied by terrific feedback and great stories from all who stopped by to say hello.

After a couple weeks of dialogue, the New Orleans Registrar of Voter’s was kind enough to invite us into her home town. Given the application of the unit, we have always thought the MVP would be an excellent addition to the election office in New Orleans and Louisiana parishes so when we were invited to show the unit, we jumped at the opportunity. We arrived in front of City Hall this morning at 7 A.M. in order to park the MVP in Duncan Plaza literally right across the street. After the Sheriff’s department blocked off the road, they kindly pointed to the 5 foot wide sidewalk that leads to the center of the plaza and indicated that was our only access route to our parking spot. With Chris at the helm, the MVP was in its parking spot quickly after the six point turn on the one way street and a short ride down the sidewalk.

The theme that resonates the most from our visit with the New Orleans election office is the passion everyone has for the city and its community members. Every person that visited the MVP commented on the way it would allow the parish to further reach out to the community through voter registration drives, voter education exhibits, mock elections for schools and continued outreach to senior citizens. In addition, attendance at events such as Jazz Fest, VooDoo Fest and Mardi Gras would further provide massive potential for effective voter awareness, resulting in increased voter turnout.

Needless to say, it was an extremely successful day in Louisiana. However, we had to put a little elbow grease in to make sure it all worked out. We would be misleading our readers (I think we’re up to seven now) if we told you that it was smooth sailing after our post en route to NOLA yesterday.

The trip from Orlando to New Orleans is 639 miles and while we’re not positive, we are pretty confident there were approximately 7.2 million of bugs in between the two cities, of which 7.1 million ended up on our windshield. When we arrived around 11:30, after a long day of exhibiting and driving, the MVP was far from City Hall Showcase shape and we knew we were up a creek without a paddle in sight. We knew we had to wash the RV prior to this morning’s demo, which sounds far simpler than it was considering we lacked a water hose, a tall ladder, long handled brush or soap. Fortunately, the wonderful people at the Holiday Inn helped us as much as they could, but conditions were not ideal and we don’t think washing our RV was in their job description. We had to bellhop all of our materials and luggage ourselves down to the bellman’s room (not to be confused with the hotel dungeon, but close.) The ladies room, where we had to obtain our buckets of water, one at a time (uphill both ways) did not stray too far from the closet in décor. After an hour and a half of working with the equivalent of moist towelettes, the MVP was finally presentable and our work was complete. All-in-all, we now feel a little bit more confident about our road-warrior status and we cannot wait to share this experience with the veterans in Austin, Texas.

Next Stop for the Mobile Voting Precinct: The Big Easy

August 19th, 2010

For those of you who are just joining us on the Printelect blog, we are now on day three of the Mobile Voting Precinct (MVP) Southeastern tour. We (Chris Andrews & I) are in charge of blogging about our adventure to not only prove to our boss that we are promoting this truly innovative mobile voting product, but to also share the experience with the five co-workers, friends and family members that actually like us enough to log-on and read.

If you are ever in Orlando looking for a Hyatt Regency, just know there is more than one. Luckily for Chris, I picked the most direct route to the wrong hotel – right through five toll stops during six o’clock traffic. Evidently, Chris didn’t get the memo on the proper lane to use and we quickly found out that when they say they don’t accept cash a particular line, they mean it. Despite what someone says, people aren’t so understanding when you have to reverse your 38’ RV fifty feet into oncoming traffic to get over to the lane furthest from you. Needless to say, we didn’t make that mistake more than four times.

Did we mention how great the weather was in Orlando? And by great, I mean hot enough make you instantly catch on fire. I would be doing a disservice to the MVP if I didn’t point how great the A/C is in the unit. With 4 independent air conditioning units, you can keep the unit a cool 70 degrees even in 100 degree weather. The only issue with having the MVP thirty feet from the doors of the building was that the MVP was thirty feet away from the doors the building. At one point, we saw a group of county representatives playing paper-rock-scissors for who had to run the gauntlet, take the tour and report back with the findings. Soon enough, the MVP was the buzz of the day and everyone was touring the vehicle in awe.

We realized the idea of the MVP tour was a hit when all the veteran election vendors stopped by share their road-warrior experiences with us. While we tried to convince them that us driving the RV through the Southeast was a throwback to the past, they quickly reminded us that the MVP has certain amenities their vans and station wagons lacked. Evidently, their vehicles lacked wireless internet, laptops, iPhones, air conditioning and for some of the older veterans, circular wheels.

As I type this, we are halfway to New Orleans and are excited about the meetings we have set up. We’ll spend the next two nights in The Big Easy before we depart to Austin for the last leg of the tour.  We will be sure to report our findings and hope that you will tune in to read them. As always, you can follow @printelect on twitter and through our Facebook Page.

Day #1 in Orlando for the Mobile Voting Precinct

August 18th, 2010

The Printelect team made it safely down the East Coast yesterday, from New Bern to Orlando. The somewhat daunting thought of driving a 38′ vehicle eleven hours quickly  subsided when after we found out how easy it drives. The RV handles extremely well and it’s obvious spatial capacities allowed us to stretch out when we needed to.

Set-up today went well at The Election Center Seminar. With over 1,000 members, The Election Center has the largest number of state and local election and voter registration administrators of any similar institution in the nation. We have a great booth space to showcase all of our election products to the hundreds of elections administrators and officials here.

Oh yea, we also happened to find a great spot right outside of the building to give tours of the MVP.

As you can see, Printelect is represented very well down here in Orlando. Even with one flight delay, CEO & President Owen Andrews made it right in time for the first attendees to arrive today.

Tomorrow will be very busy. The brunt of the day will be showing our products and meeting the entirety of the attendees, as well as giving those that are interested tours of the MVP. We hear the MVP is the buzz of the event, which is pretty exciting in our opinion.

After that, Mike and I are gonna scoot out and make our way into New Orleans. We won’t make it into the big easy until late, so we won’t be enjoying too much of the Bourbon Street nightlife.

We look forward to making new relationships and cultivating exisiting ones at the show tomorrow! Check back here tomorrow afternoon for another entry. We hope to have plenty of event pictures and possibly a video or two. As always, follow @printelect on Twitter for real-time updates and be sure to also check out our Facebook Page.
